GOING TO THE BEACH
IN THE CENTRE
In Salvador, just in the center of the city, you can spend some pleasant time at any moment of the day.
FARROL DA BARRA: Next to the Headlights. There are some waves and some wind at this place. You'll enjoy the shadow at several barracas with some fresh beer, listening to some Pagode or Samba-Canção.
PORTO DA BARRA: The water is clear, there are no waves and when it is very hot, the people of the barracas come to drop water on your feet. Very cool sensation!!!
ONDINA: To be fair, the beach of Ondina is not a big deal but if you are passing in this district, just jump to the water and have fun there!!!
NEARBY SALVADOR
Nearby the city, you'll enjoy the real thing: The tropical atmosphere!!! All of these beaches are to the direction of Itapoan and the airport. Direct by bus from the center. After Itapoan, you'll find the most beautiful ones. If you arrive to "Praia do Forte", 60 Km up to the north, you'll feel like in Paradise...
JARDIM DE ALA: "The Garden of Alah" The name talk by itself. The first very high coconuts in an oasis of green field that you discover, going out from the city. Pleasant moments on the week-ends.
ARMAÇÃO, JAGUARIPE AND BOCA DO RIO: Between Jardim de Ala and Itapoan, these are the Beaches of the "Orla" of Salvador (the road along the sea). 15 Km of barracas, the only problem is to decide which one to stay. After, it is simple: Good music and nice people!!! During the reveillon, the bahian people, wearing white clothes, are commemorating at midnight, on the beach or in the water!!!
ITAPOAN: "To spend an afternoon in Itapoan..." This beach became famous because of the song of Vinicius de Moraes. Itapoan in the afternoon, next to the headlights, that means simply the absolute lazyleness. In the shade of the coconuts, rocked by the noise of the waves, after having begun with drinking some tropical fruit juices, perhaps that the only dilemma which you will be confronted with, will be to choose between a caípirinha or a caípiroska... While waiting for your fish dish cooked in the coconut milk.
Caípirinha = Alcohol of cane + green lemon, sugar and crushed ice
Caípiroska = Vodka + green lemon, sugar and crushed ice
PEDRA DO SAL, PRAIA DO FLAMENGO, STELLA MARIS: After the headlights of Itapoan, the nature is exuberant. The dimensions are bigger, there is more green, the sand is more white and you are a part of it. Only be careful, the sea is a little bit violent when there is some wind.
PRAIA DO FORTE: 60 Km up to the north. Direct by bus from the central bus station (Rodoviaria). Only one bus in the morning, another one is bringing you back to Salvador in the evening. Next to a small village of fishers, this beach is simply a dream. The sea, when going down, is leaving just like some little natural pools. Inside these pools, drinking the water of some green coconut, you'll be meditating about the very hard conditions of the life!!!...

Senhor do Bonfim
SOME PLACES THAT YOU CAN'T MISS
THE CHURCH SENHOR DO BONFIM
Usually open from Tuesday to Sunday 8h to 12h and 14h to 18h. The most popular church of Bahia receives each year the great procession of N.S. C Bonfim. It was especially built to receive the statue of Christ in cross (made ivory and of money) brought of Sétubal, in Portugal, in 1745. The small bracelets coloured that will want to put on your wrist all the children at the entry of the church correspond to a quite precise rite. The length of these pieces of fabric is equal to the spacing of the arms of the statue of Christ in cross. While passing some to your wrist and by making three nodes there, it will be necessary for you to make three wishes. When the bracelet, used, yields, these wishes will be granted. According to some, it is necessary to add an additional constraint to guarantee the realization of your wishes: not to throw the bracelets anywhere, but in a river or in the sea...
Musée Afro Brésilien
MUSEUM AFRO-BRASILEIRO
At the angle of the terreiro of Jesus and street Alfred Brito. Tel: 321 03 83. Open Tuesday at Saturday, of 9h with 17h. Interesting for its outline of candomblé, with representations of the orixas, some of them superb. Also an evocation of will capoeira, the traditional costumes, the African works of art. With the basement, the archaeological and ethnological museum (closed between 12h and 14h and saturdays)
Museum of Sacred Art
HOLY ARTS MUSEUM
Rua do Sodre, 276. Tel: 243 65 11. Open Monday at Friday of 9h30 with 11h30 and 14h with 17h30. Old sheltering convent of the completely exceptional collections of sacred art. The quite suitable framework and the intelligent provision of the objects visit very alive and attractive. Many statues out of polychrome wooden, ivory, soapstone, murals, small the XVIII century miniature oratories, cultural silver tables and objects. In the sacristy, fountain of marble, splendid azuleijos. To admire the work of the cabinetmaker who did the convenient in jacaranda of 10,72m length. All around the museum, beautiful garden offering superb sun sets on the bay of All the Saints. Very romantic.
The Pelourinho (Old City)
THE PELOURINHO (THE OLD CITY) CALLED "PELO"
It is there that is concentrated all the popular fervour of Salvador. There what takes life all the stereotypes and postcards printed in the head since your departure. The great bahian writer Jorge Amado wrote: " All richness of the man of Bahia, in grace and civilization, and all its infinite poverty, all its drama and all its magic are born and are found in the old city. " It is true but not anymore so much as that: the whole of the district was considerably renovated these last years and the problems of security disappeared at the same time as the majority from the poors, driven out in favelas moved away by the increase from the rents... Touristical restaurants, shops of souvenirs and centers artisanal replaced the dwellings formerly corroded by moisture. And, with each corner of street, the police officers took the place of the beggars and of the small robbers who terrorized, it is not so a long time, the tourists. One even sees, spectacle enough funny, groups of organized trips escorted by young women in uniform! Tourism gained there in peace but one can almost consider it regrettable that the district lost of its authenticity, even if it did not lose his heart: each weekend Bahian people continues to have fun on the paving stones, so much so that the streets are often blocked! In short, the old city is not anymore the "cut-throat" ghetto which it could be. This point known, it is better to avoid to loose yourself at night in some obscure lanes, particulary those which go down towards the low city: one still finds in certain forsaken corners, a fauna of small dealers, devastated travestis or transexuals and others desperate ones, who could be interested of a little bit too close with your dollars...
COOL IN THE DAY...
Perfect to walk in the old city during the day. Along its inclined streets, you will be able to visit Museu da Cidade, the church São Francisco or the Basilica da Sé and the Fondação Jorge Amado devoted to the most famous bahian writer of the planet.
Let your glance lose itself in the tone pastels of the houses or that of naive paintings of the artists of streets. Then stop at the angle of a street, to listen to a "samba canção", to drink a quite fresh beer and like one says in Bahia: " Relaxa! " (Relax yourself!)
...HOT IN THE NIGHT!!!
In Pelourinho, Tuesday or " Dia da Benção ", at the end of the afternoon, is marked by an imported religious ritual from Portugal. In the church São Francisco, the priest blesses the faithful ones to provide a spiritual protection to them. Following that is added the profane part, imported from Africa. The exuberance... the festival!!!
Until very late in the night, the " Pelo " vibrates with the syncopated rhythm of the Samba-Reggae. On the great place " Terreio of Jesus " but also in all the streets where improvisated batucadas which cross by the same occasion the groups of Pagode animating the multiple bars of the district.
People talk to each other, smile themselves, touch themselves. The women are beautiful and irresistible... One easily forgets there all the constraints of the week...
Vous connaissez la Capoeira?
CAPOEIRA LESSONS
If you stay a long time in Bahia, you can start learning Capoeira a fight mixed with dance imported by the slaves from africa.
CAPOEIRA MESTRE BIMBA: Rua Francisco Muniz Barreto 01, on the second floor. Terreio de Jesus. Open from 9h to 11h and from 16h to 19h.
Musée d'Arts Modernes
MODERN ARTS MUSEUM (M.A.M)
Solar do União Av. Contorno. Tel to Disque Turismo 131 to know the subject of the exposition. The site is simply great, a Panoramic view to the Island of Itaparica. "Jam Session" every Saturday in the evening with the best jazzmen of Salvador.
Le Mercado Modelo
MERCADO MODELO
Located in the old buildings of the customs. In December 1983, the market almost entirely burned and the craftsmen who occupied it had to settle around, constituting a small market of fortune. Mercado Modelo was rebuilt and the life fortunately took again its course around the small port. But the market was transformed into a gallery of shops all the ones more touristical than the others. On the second floor, it is the same thing. The tourists will be satisfied with the collars of Bahia sold at exorbitant prices or of a Berimbau... The others will excavate elsewhere, goshawks of the church of Bonfim, for example. One can nevertheless find hammocks at reasonable price there, while haggling over. On the second floor, two restaurants with a large terrace which offers a pleasant sight on animation of the port. In front of the market, saturdays morning, dancers of Capoeira. If you photograph them, they will ask you money.
Important. Splendid babies ouistitis will be also proposed to you. Do not make the madness bring back some to Europe. Initially because the Convention of Washington of 1980 prohibits the export of savage animals, then because these small extremely fragile monkeys do not support the lack of sun. Even if it is charming, do not yield.
Le Mercado São Joaquim
MERCADO SÃO JOAQUIM
Towards north, at the edge of bay of All the Saints, it is the most picturesque market of Salvador. Immense and very animated. Mainly gone of feeding with all the specialities of the area: grasses, dendé, spices, honey, of the vegetable and mountains of fruits sold in an inextricable maze of muddy lanes. Permanent scuffles and feverish businesses. All small trades and much of shops specialized with the old decoration without age, used colors, figures patinated with black wrinkles, and then the thousand shapes of bottles of dendé and dried shrimp baskets. Close to the port, tons of sugar canes are unloaded. Under the covered market, market of the meat and, further, spices, serpentines of tobacco and cigars really not expensive. All around the kids who sell cafezinhos, cakes, crabes... A small street is specialized in the pottery and the basket making of straw and wicker. Ferry-Boat for Itaparica leaves from here.
